The partnership will bring the Biometric Checkout Program to the Asia Pacific region
NEC, partnering up with Mastercard’s payments operations, is serving biometric and liveness solutions to secure in-store payments for customers across the APAC, with more limitless options for how to pay than ever.
The combination of NEC’s fast face processing software and Mastercard’s innovative space in digital and wallet payments will strive to deliver convenience for customers and merchants across the APAC region and eliminate pin or password requests while standing in the queue to purchase.
In-store digital payments just became more secure, seamless and personal. The partnership was sealed with a Memorandum of Understanding agreement and is already built on a promising foundation as Mastercard has implemented provisions for onboarding customers with biometrics and verifying its customers transactions made at the checkout. Customers and businesses alike are embracing biometrics which by 2025 are predicted to verify transactions of over $3 trillion.
Biometrics have become entrenched as a tool for payments service providers to combat fraud, not least Mastercard who worked with NEC for a pilot of the Checkout Program last year to launch and scale new checkout capabilities.
Mastercard will be deploying technologies that go beyond face recognition and face-powered payment cards with virtual reality and wearable contactless payment methods.
The trusted technology that Mastercard introduced last year – the new Biometric Checkout Program – uses face or fingerprint to unlock your phone and helps consumers speed through the checkout with ease. Consumers have the option to conveniently enrol into their biometric checkout services, in store or at home, through a merchant or identity provider app.
Ajay Bhalla, President, Cyber and Intelligence Solutions, Mastercard, said: “As retailing environments continue to evolve and choices in ways to pay rapidly expand, biometric solutions offer a seamless, quick and secure checkout, without needing to unlock a phone or insert a PIN”.
